Having worked with the Claremont Colleges for 10 years now, Susan Kerns, the Administrative Assistant at the International Place of the Claremont Colleges, is all set to retire on Friday, Mar. 2. Kerns’ initial career was pretty far from helping international students as she worked in finance for 25 years. She graduated from Santa Monica College and worked at the Institute of Banking and Management. At the banking company, she serviced to provide products to help secure the financial future of businesses. While working, she realized getting to know people’s dreams makes it easier to provide them with financial services that help them achieve their goals.

After several years in the financial sector, Kerns began hosting students from Japan who took English classes at Pitzer College. She decided to expand that experience and apply for a vacancy in the International Program Office at Pitzer, which she enjoyed. “I loved the opportunity to be a part of the lives of such incredible students from around the world,” Kerns said.

Kerns has lived in Claremont for over 25 years now, and said that “raising her daughter in this community has been a full and rewarding experience.” During her time here, one of the biggest changes has been the growing international student population.

Kerns said, “I will miss the campus atmosphere and my daily interactions with strong, intelligent co-workers.” Her experience at I-Place was focused on fostering a community among the students and staff members, but most importantly, to bolster individual strengths. She believes that strengthening your own abilities helps do the same for other students and staff members as well.

While it will be a big adjustment to retire and settle in Arizona, Kerns is looking forward to the move. Upon retiring she plans to visit several foreign countries, including Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

Visit I-Place on Friday, Mar. 2 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. for a Coffee & Company Reception and goodbye party for Kerns.
