Athenas Lose Last Regular-Season Match
Game Recap by Nathan Falk
The SCIAC post-season tournament begins Thursday night, but viewers got an exciting preview of coming attractions on Tuesday in Claremont, CA.
The Occidental Tigers defeated the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas in the last match of the regular-season, but the real test is still to come. These two teams will face-off again Thursday night in the first round of the SCIAC tournament, and this time, the loser faces elimination.
The Athenas took the first set 25-23, but then Occidental bounced back in the second set, dominating the Athenas 25-14. Tied 1-1, the Athenas played superbly late into the third set building a 24-16 lead on the backs of their upperclassmen Taylor Jones (CMC '13) who had 38 sets, and Emily Hudson (CMC '12) who led the team with 14 kills.
Then it all fell apart. Occidental scored point after point, eventually coming back to win the third set on a 10-0 run. After taking the set 26-24, the fourth set (25-12) seemed to be almost a formality as the Tigers carried the momentum to a match victory.
The match has no real significance in the grand scheme of the season, but it is quite a momentum shift heading into Thursday's playoff at Cal Lutheran. Whether the Athenas regain their energy and composure, or fall once again to OXY remains to be seen. One thing, however, is certain: Thursday night's match will be exciting to watch.
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas take on the Tigers of Occidental College tonight in their last home match of the season. Both teams currently have a 10-3 SCIAC conference record, and are tied for 2nd place with 2 matches to play.
