Athenas Soccer Crush Whittier

Game Recap by Jenny Phillips

The CMS Athenas (6-5-3, 6-3-1 SCIAC) pull through to beat the Whittier Poets (1-13, 1-3 SCIAC) 7-3 after a close but high-scoring first half. Poets sophomore Ashlin Steele scored the first goal of the game in the 3rd minute. CMS quickly responded with a goal by Shauny Ullman (CMC ’14) in the 4th minute. Poets star forward Madison Shipherd scored a goal almost immediately after (also in the 4th minute). After the three early scores, both teams struggled to keep possession of the ball during the exciting first half. In the 17th minute, Scooby Phillips (CMC ’13) dribbled the ball in from the sideline and slotted it just past Whittier keeper Shanna Falch, tying the game at 2-2. Two minutes later, Lizzie van Buskirk (CMC ’14) scored, giving the Athenas their first lead in the game. Ullman scored again in the 28th minute, picking up her sixth goal of the season. In the 41st minute, Shipherd scored again for the Poets off a free kick just outside the 18 yard box, making the halftime score 4-3 Athenas. In the second half, the Athenas dominated the game, adding three more goals (Rachel Bunting in the 49th minute, Annie Belanger in the 59th, and Rosa Ahn in the 85th), and shutting out the Poets for a final score of 7-3. Both keepers were tested all game with 20 shots by CMS and 12 shots by Whittier. The Athenas are now in second place in SCIAC standings and have two conference games left before the SCIAC tournament. They will be playing at La Verne on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Poets look to get a few more wins in their last three SCIAC games of the season. Pregame Coverage

Tonight the CMS women’s soccer team (5-5-3, 5-3-1 SCIAC) will play the Whittier Poets (1-12, 1-7 SCIAC) at home. The Poets have been struggling all season and finally got their first win on the season a couple weeks ago. They have shown significant improvement in the last few weeks and looking to get another win in the second half of conference play. The Athenas just tied Pomona-Pitzer in a big rivalry game and are hungry to get a few more wins to solidify their #2 seed in conference playoffs. The last time the two teams met was at Whittier and the Athenas crushed the Poets 5-0. Freshman forward Madison Shipherd, leading the Poets in shots on goal all year, will be a key player if Whittier wants to challenge the Athenas. On the other side of the ball, senior captain Rosa Ahn will be leading the defense in trying to shut the Poets down again.
