Volleyball: Athenas sweep Beavers

Game Recap by Drew Beckerman

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas increased their winning streak to four games and improved to 10-7 (5-2 in conference) with an impressive win over the CalTech Beavers. The Athenas defeated the Beavers in every game by decisive scores of 25-15, 25-12, and 25-7.

CMS came out strong in the first game and never looked back, as they never saw themselves behind until they lost the first point of the second game. Unfortunately for CalTech, CMS was at the top of their game the entire night, and actually increased their margin of victory in every game.

The Athenas were able to dominate in every aspect of the game. Starting with serving, the Athenas were able to ace the Beavers 13 times, led by Hilary Bruegl with 7. Bruegl dominated games 1 and 3 with her serving, and held long stints without giving up a point in both of those games. Bruegl also had an amazing game as a setter as she was able to place the ball wherever she wanted, setting up her teammates for 23 of the team’s 27 kills. In the attacking game, it was a total team effort as Courtney Searls led the way with 7 kills, followed by Annie Fleming and Regina Mullen with 6 kills each.

CMS next plays on Friday, October 7 in an away game against Cal Lutheran. Their next home match is a conference game on October 18th against the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens.

Pre-Game Coverage

by Joanmarie Del Vecchio Tonight at Ducey Gymnasium, the CMS Athenas will face the Caltech Beavers in conference play at 7:30, hoping to edge past the winless Beavers. The Beavers, who are currently 0-10, will face off against the Athenas, hot off their three-match winning streak. Last season, CMS topped Caltech in a 3-0 match, and the Athenas are perhaps looking for a repeat performance. In the Athena’s 3-1 win over Occidental last Saturday night, Junior Taylor Jones notched 41 assists and sophomore Bennett Jones led the team in kills with 15. While the Beavers lost to Whittier that same night, sophomore Paige Logan led her team with eight kills for the night. This match is crucial for the Athenas to improve their position in the SCIAC conference, for it is the final match of the first round of conference play.
