Athenas Falter in 2nd Half, Lose to Redlands 2-1

Post Game Recap by Dante Quazzo

The Redlands Bulldogs fought off the CMS Athenas, as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps fell 2-1 in a tight game. After taking an early lead on a goal by Maddi Shove (SCR ’13), the Athenas (4-3-2, 4-2 SCIAC) couldn’t repel the Redlands offensive attack, allowing two goals in the second half of their conference game this afternoon. The Bulldogs (5-3-1, 2-3) received goals from seniors Fionna Connolly (51st minute) and Kaily Benenati (74th minute), both coming off of corner kicks. Connolly, last year’s SCIAC leading scorer, picked up her fifth goal of the season while Benenati tallied her fourth. Both teams had many chances in the first half, but only the Athenas could capitalize. The goalies were busy all day long, as Redlands and CMS created constant pressure amounting to a combined 20 shots. Athenas' goalkeeper Hannah Dunham (CMC ’14) recorded four saves in the game. Shove’s early goal puts her in the team lead this year with five, as she continues to be a key player for CMS. The loss snaps a four-game SCIAC win streak for the Athenas, as they look to bounce back against Chapman University on Wednesday at 5:00. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs improve to 2-3 and look to continue their success against SCIAC rival La Verne on Wednesday.

Pre-Game Coverage

by Dante Quazzo

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas (4-2-2, 4-1 SCIAC) look to keep their 4-game SCIAC winning streak going against the Redlands Bulldogs (4-3-1, 1-3 SCIAC).  Their last contest was a tight one, with the Athenas pulling out a 1-0 victory in overtime, so look for this game to be tightly contested.

The Athenas are coming off another overtime victory, 3-2, over SCIAC foe La Verne.  Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are looking to build a win streak after a non-conference victory over Chapman.  Shaundra Ullman (CMC ’14) scored two goals in CMS’ win over La Verne, and will strive to do the same against rival Redlands.  Redlands senior Jaimie Morton (’12) is also coming off a two-goal game, as she and last year’s SCIAC goals leader Fionna Connoly (Redlands ’12) lead the Bulldogs against the Athenas.
