Athenas Defeat Leopards in Overtime, 3-2

Game Recap by Nathan Falk

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps triumphed over the La Verne Leopards tonight in overtime. In the 94th minute, Maddie Shove (SCR '13) was tackled inside the penalty box, lined up for a penalty kick, and struck the ball hard into the back of the net sending everyone home and giving the Athenas their 4th victory of the season.

The game heavily favored CMS throughout the first half. Shaundra Ullman (CMC '14) scored a goal in the 5th minute to give the Athenas an early lead that the would hold all the way into halftime. McKenna Gooden (La Verne '14) answered in the 65th minute, however, when she sent a long, high arcing ball towards Hannah Dunham (CMC '14). It tipped off of Dunham's hands and into the net, making it 1-1.

Just five minutes later, Shaundra Ullman (CMC '14) answered with her second goal of the game, putting the Athenas back on top 2-1. With under 7 minutes left, however, Krystal Gutierrez (La Verne '15) was left undefended with an open net, and finished to send the game to overtime.

After her golden goal, just 4 minutes into over time, Maddie Shove and Shaundra Ullman now share the team lead in goals (each has 4 respectively), and have shown leadership in key games early in 2011 conference play.

The victory helps the Athenas improve to 4-1 in SCIAC play, while the Leopards drop to 1-4. CMS will take on Redlands on Saturday at home beginning at 11 AM, and you can tune in to the live broadcast on the Forum beginning at 10:50 AM.
