Men's Soccer: PP Defeats CMS 2-0
Game Recap by Ari Zyskind
The Sagehens scored early and never looked back as Pomona-Pitzer (3-3, 2-1 SCIAC) defeated the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags (4-2, 2-1 SCIAC) 2-0 Wednesday night. In the second minute of the game, Michael Ceragioli (PO '14) took a pass from inside the top left of the box and slid it by Ricky Doar (CMC '12). The Hens struck again in the 79th minute when Lawrence McDonald (PZ '15), sprinting into the box, received a cross from Evan Munoz, tucking the ball into the right side of the net giving the men in blue a 2-0 lead. The defeat ended the Stags' four game win-streak and bumped CMS from the top spot in the SCIAC rankings.
The Stags had chances to equalize the game but could not finish as little seemed to roll CMS' way when it mattered most. Jared Bernstein (CMC '13) almost scored from 15 feet out, beating goalkeeper Rollie Thayer (PO '14). But Erik Munzer (PZ '13) quickly jumped in front of Bernstein's shot and deflected it wide. Later in the game, in the 36th minute, Jake Bishop dodged into the box and unleashed a hard right shot that clanked off the post and out of play.
The Stags pressured the young PP defense but the Hens, although giving up possessions, did not allow the goal and instead opted to play counter attacks, creating their chances off of missed Stag opportunities. With 7 minutes remaining, Harrison Doyle (CMC '13) curved the ball towards the upper left corner of the net but Rollie Thayer made one of his seven saves of the night, tipping the ball over the bar for a corner. Doyle again almost scored off the corner but the Pomona-Pitzer defense quickly booted the ball out of their box.
The CMS Stags are back in action Friday night when they take on Hendrix College at 4 PM at Pritzlaff Field and return to SCIAC play on Saturday at 1 PM versus University of La Verne. Saturday's game will be brought to you with a live broadcast which you can find at the Forum. The 6th street rivalry continues October 15th at Pomona-Pitzer.

The 6th Street soccer rivalry is back as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags (4-1, 2-0 SCIAC) take on the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens (2-3, 1-1 SCIAC). On Saturday, the Stags defeated fellow SCIAC opponenet Occidental College 2-1 to push their win streak to four while Pomona-Pitzer shutout La Verne 2-0 in both teams' SCIAC home opener.
Strikers Jared Bernstein (CMC '13) and Harrison Doyle (CMC '13) lead the Stag attack, both scoring 2 goals a piece this season. Goal Keeper Ricky Doar (CMC '12) and Center Back Zach Doran (CMC '13) anchor the defense which has allowed five goals in as many games.
Pomona-Pitzer, rich in youth, started five freshman against La Verne but Juniors Robbie Hull (PO '13) and Erik Munzer (PZ '13) cement the middle. Senior Starter Evan Munoz (PZ '12) and Junior Daniel Nasry (PO '13) lead the team with 1 goal a piece.
The Stags look to keep their spot atop the SCIAC standings while Pomona-Pitzer, tied for fourth, aims to break 0.500 in conference play as the Hens travel across 6th Street to Pritzlaff field to take on the Stags at 7:00 PM tonight. The live audio broadcast, begining at 6:50 PM, is brought to you tonight by Ari Zyskind (CMC '12) and Anderson Wright (PO '12).
