Stags Football Rolls Over Whittier on Homecoming Saturday

November 14, 2008

by Gui Schils

On a sunny and beautiful Homecoming Saturday, the Stags Football team notched their second SCIAC victory of the season in impressive fashion, downing Whittier 31-6. The Stags got on the board first, when D.J. Lillard (CMC JR) scampered in for his first of two touchdown runs on the day. The men dominated on both sides of the ball, totaling more than 230 yards of offense, while holding the Poets to only a first half score. The Football team wraps up their season across the street against rival Pomona-Pitzer at 1:00pm. The Stags Soccer team wrapped up their season this past Thursday with a loss at Redlands 1-0 in double OT. The Stags were the definite underdog in the semifinal SCIAC Tournament matchup, with Redlands racking up at 11-0-1 record in the regular season. The Stags and Bulldogs played a defensive battle, another nailbiter between teams that pushed each other in their two regular season matchups.

After 80 minutes of scoreless regulation time, the two teams battled through nearly two overtime periods. A Bulldog headed through a cross with 90 seconds left before penalty kicks would have been necessary. The men’s soccer team closes out the season at 7-8-4, with a 7-4-3 record in conference.

The Men’s Water Polo team had a tough weekend. On Saturday, the Stags hosted Redlands’ Bulldogs at Axelrood Pool. Redlands Water Polo has lately been the top dog standard in the SCIAC, but any matchup between rivals this bitter always means a good game. In a shootout, the Bulldogs defeated the Stags 15-12. Vince Schiavoni (CMC FR) led the Stags with 4 goals, while goalie Sean Wasserman (CMC SO) saved 10 shots.

The aquamen next took on the Air Force Academy on Sunday, and lost 10-6. On Friday, the Stags then opened up the SCIAC Tournament with a 10-7 loss to host Cal Lutheran. The Regals jumped out to 4-1 advantage after the first period. CMS stormed back with a 6-1 run in the second and early third period, regaining the momentum. The Kingsmen defense clamped down in the final 14 minutes though, allowing Cal Lu to score 5 unanswered goals.

Make sure to get out and support the Football team at Pomona and the Women’s Soccer team in their NCAA Tournament opener at Redlands on Saturday.
