Women’s Soccer and Volleyball Teams Continue Strong Play

The Men’s Soccer team had a week of close games against conference opponents, going 1-0-2. Last Saturday, the Stags tied La Verne in the second OT with seconds remaining to leave the game deadlocked at 1-1. On Wednesday, they defeated Cal Lutheran on Pritzlaff Field 2-0, and then they tied Occidental 1-1 on this past Saturday, also in double OT. The Stags are tied with Pomona-Pitzer for second in conference behind Redlands, and continue their busy conference play on Wednesday at Redlands. Women’s Soccer had a better week than their male counterparts, going 2-1 on the week. Hosting La Verne last Saturday, the Athenas had an offensive explosion in the second half to break open a 0-0 halftime tie and win 4-1. Giselle Galanto (JR CMC) had an assist to Brittney Watson (SR CMC) and a goal of her own. At Cal Lu, the girls played a balanced game and handily defeated the Regals 3-0. Finally, this past Saturday, the Athenas fell to Occidental in their first conference loss 1-0. The Athenas will get another chance at the Tigers on October 29th, and they remain tied at the top of SCIAC standings with Redlands.

The Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams traveled to the Willamette Invitational on Saturday. The men finished 9th overall, led by Bryan Chow (FR HMC ), their third different top finisher in as many races. The field was strong, including the likes of Chico State and Lewis and Clark. The women finished 3rd, behind the aforementioned teams. The Athenas were led by Evelyn Ross (SR SCR) who finished 13th overall, and Julia Rigy (FR SCR), who finished 13 seconds later in 17th place.

The Men’s Football team opened up their conference play with a tough 38-0 loss on the road at Occidental. The team managed some good looking drives, but turned the ball over on downs several times, and missed a 51-yd field goal. Oxy’s high octane offense was difficult to contain, scoring three times in the first half. The men were led on defense by Ashton Clarke (SR CMC) who gathered 9 tackles. The Stags look to rebound Saturday night, hosting La Verne at 7pm.

After defeating the Sagehens 3-1 on Tuesday, the Women’s Volleyball team dropped a tough 3-1 decision to #18 Cal Lu on Friday. The steady serving of the Athenas broke down in the second set, and the Athenas found themselves in a 2-0 deficit. They fought back in the third to claim one of their own, before dropping the fourth after some impressive serving by the Regals side. They girls bounced back on Saturday, traveling to Redlands for a 3-0 win. The Athenas play improved with each set, with both teams playing efficiently and aggressively in the third set. Down 16-20, the girls put together a run to tie it, then a kill and an ace by Angela Estrella-Lemus (SO CMC) sealed the win 28-26.

Men’s Water Polo hosted the Claremont Convergence tournament this weekend alongside Pomona. The first day, the Stags played some up and down, forcing a close game before losing to one of the nation’s best, Santa Clara, and then losing to Mercyhurst College 10-5. On Saturday, the Stags dropped another 2 games, losing the finale to Fordham 9-8 in OT.
