I remember my 2007 WOA trip well. It was an odd mix of campers but that’s the beauty of WOA – you meet folks you never would have if you didn’t sit 8 hours in a sweaty bus together.

Our second day at Mammoth Lakes it poured buckets while we stood cramped under a small tarp singing camp songs. Conveniently, our sleeping bags caught the brunt of the storm, forcing our leaders to make a decision between booking a hotel or losing 14 campers to hypothermia. After some unnecessary deliberation, they chose hotel. Rather, a massive three-floor resort with beds for all of us.

Three years later, it’s cool to see everyone a little more grown up, preparing to be a college graduate. We all have different majors and I can’t say that I really hang with anyone from the trip, we do smile at each other, say hello, have short conversations. We’re not besties, but I couldn’t have wished for a trip with more amazing people.

I’m nostalgic, wondering where the time went, and happy to see that this year’s freshman have made some friends on their own adventures. Have fun with your first college buds, your first crush – the first group of individuals who like you for who you are, not for you killer AP scores.

The following is a collection of pictures submitted by CMC freshmen and their WOA leaders.

The second letter of advice comes from senior, Alexander Reichert. Hailing from Boston, Reichert is a member of ASCMC, serving as our Dorm Affairs Chair (DAC). He is also a member of the Claremont Cougars men’s lacrosse team and a three-time W.O.A.! Leader.

Well hello there, newest additions to the happiest campus in the country.

First, I would like to welcome you and express my personal excitement for your freshman class. From the impressions that W.O.A.! leaders had of their groups, to some of the orientation stories that have been told, to hanging with a few of you in Green lounge on Tuesday night, I have heard nothing but positive things about your class from the the upper classmen.

Now, don’t let that go to your head. You should all be very excited to be here and you will find that this place will provide you with opportunities that you never really understood were possible. Take advantage of as many of these as you can. Bite off more than you can chew this semester. Get involved with all sorts of clubs and organizations. Join every intramural sports team you can find time for. Be social as well as studious. Work hard, play hard.

Finding the perfect balance between your social life and your school work is what freshman year is all about. No one expects you to get it right, especially in your first year. With this I suggest not to dilly dally. When you go to the library to study – go and study, don’t surf YouTube for three hours only to find you haven’t gotten any work done (I will save you the time, go straight to Alcoholic Vervet Monkeys).

Understand that you will not get along with everyone and that may include your own roommate. Make sure to communicate. The worst thing for any relationship is to bury issues away. Ignoring the issues does not help either party involved – talk it out.

Don’t be that guy or girl. We all know who “that guy” is. He is the sloppy douchebag trying to show off to his buddies. It’s insecurity and it’s transparent. Over the past few years we have developed a reputation from the other 5Cs – don’t perpetuate the stereotype. This is a suggestion for life, treat everyone you meet with the utmost respect, until their observed actions indicate anything less. You never know who the person you are talking to may be, where they have come from, or what they have gone through. So once again, don’t be that guy.

I would like to leave you with a few things that I think make CMC what it is. I hope that when I return three years from now, when you all will be seniors, these same defining characteristics will still ring true.

Be inclusive. Always welcome other CMCers to your events, regardless of their age or interests.

Continue to celebrate our love affair with Pomona-Pitzer athletics – be a super fan.

Keep Green Beach as Green Beach.

But most importantly appreciate the fact that every CMCer is a little bit quirky. Enjoy finding out these unique personality traits of everyone around campus.

The next four years, and really the rest of your life from this point forward, is what you make it. Take advantage of this great place. If you stay social, study hard, and get involved, I promise you will find success.

If you ever want to speak at greater lengths, or hear some of my many mistakes (so as to not repeat them in the future), feel free to email me areichert11@cmc.edu, or stop me when you see me around campus.

See you soon,
A

By 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Orientation had come to a close, teary-eyed parents were long gone, and the freshmen finally finished setting up their bunks at Camp Claremont. Many of the new students found their little minds brimming with all of the sage advice that could possibly fit in a paper folder. Use the writing center, go to the Ath, try Pitzer lunch – but, hey, that’s just the obvious stuff. What about the things that don’t come in your orientation packet? Despite the best efforts of W.O.A.! Leaders and Sponsors, there are some crucial tidbits that still manage to fly under the radar. Don’t worry new campers, the Forum is here to help, offering a series of short letters from a reliable crew of both familiar faces and fresh, new voices.

To kick it off, sophomore Libby Friede from Philadelphia hits on the sensitive topic of the infamous high school sweetheart.

Dear Freshman,

If you’ve ever seen the movie Annie Hall you are familiar with a basic premise: boy meets girl, they fall in love, girl moves across the country. There are two potential ends to the story:
Boy and Girl realize someone needs to move so they can be together
Boy and Girl go their separate ways. Both have a hard time, and then they move on.

When I was a freshman, I moved from Pennsylvania to California. My boyfriend moved to New York City. (The exact locations NYC and LA parallel the movie to perfection.) We watched Annie Hall and realized the Woody Allen-Diane Keaton conundrum was only a few weeks away from reality. After endless nights of talking about it and not talking about it, we decided to make it work. After all, we had technology on our side. How hard could it be with Skype, e-mail, Facebook, and cell phones? I arrived in California nervous and lonely. I didn’t know a single person, and it was so much easier to log onto Skype than open my door and meet new people.

For three weeks we attempted a game of long distance ping-pong. He called, but I couldn’t pick up because of orientation. I called, and he had just started dinner. It was frustrating and isolating. I skipped out on so many parties and invitations to fro-yo because we had a Skype date, or I was on the phone. I was technically in Claremont but I was in this strange limbo-land, equal parts Philadelphia, New York, and Claremont. Finally, there was the fateful call: “this isn’t working.” At first, I felt even more alone. Then someone invited me to a Friday night performance of Without a Box (so good!). I almost said no out of habit, but I realized I didn’t have a phone call coming, so I went out. And then I had fun. Little by little, I went to more parties and more club meetings. I met more people and got out of my room and out of my shell.

I don’t write this letter of advice saying don’t have a long distance significant other. There are some people who do it; there are some people who can make it work. There are also plenty of people (freshman mostly) with a significant other across the country or around the world. They will probably say things like “we’re practically married” or “the distance makes us closer.” Hate to break it to you, but for a lot of you in this boat, the break-up wave is coming and it’s okay. It’s really hard to give 100% to making new friends and living in a new place when you feel so connected to somewhere else.

Break-ups are always tough, but they are even harder when you’re a million miles from home. Instead of making a playlist of sad songs, find someone in your hall to talk about it with. Chances are you are not the only one in the same situation. Talking about your break-up is not only free therapy, you’ll probably get a really good friend out of it.

For those of you who do stay with your far-off significant other, make sure you give Claremont a shot. Try to get out there and make new friends. Whether you’re an alternative Allie or a preppy Pam, you can find your people here; you just have to go out and look for them. From classes to clubs to TNC, get out and meet people! I know this is advice that you’ve probably heard a million times but it’s true. If your mind’s tied to a lover across the country, your eyes on computer screen, and your ear glued to a phone, there’s a lot less room and a lot less time to meet people here that will become your Claremont family.

Peace, Love, and Cheesesteaks,

Libby Friede

W.O.A.! Sex, Life and Relationships. Scripps Carnival. Dry Week. All those events took place during this year’s freshman orientation, but none were quite as well documented as the 5C Freshman Photo Scavenger Hunt. Last Saturday, freshmen and new students were given clues that led them to the Jay’s Place at Harvey Mudd, the Pitzer pool, the Motley at Scripps, and the Ath. Bonus points were awarded for keeping cool and pouring ice on another freshman. Congratulations to the winning team– Andie Wheatley, Kelsey Brown, Ryan Boone, JJ Suttle, Alyssa Roberts, and Abie Katz.

The clues they had to work with:

This 5C college is not too far to roam. Every year they host a gathering full of foam. After dancing the night away, get a famous Galileo Sub at the Place of Jay.

When things heat up, this place will keep you cool! So head out and take a picture at Pitzer’s pool.

More often full of shes than hes, this locale is known for its coffees and teas.

Enjoy intellectual discourse and speakers from across the world and nation, this location also hosts our annual Madrigals celebration.

BONUS: Pour ice on another freshman.
