I’m very serious about this idea.  There are no good justifications for having Fall Break.

Coming only a month and a half into the Fall semester, Fall Break isn’t necessary to give students a break from their workload — they’ve just had three months of summer.  At only two days (plus the standard two days of the weekend), Fall Break does not give students the opportunity for meaningful travel, especially since one needs to return to campus on the last day of Fall Break. For many students, traveling back and forth takes about a day itself, so a quarter of the break is spent in transit. Given how short Fall Break is, many students and professors simply use the time to catch up on work or get started on thesis. It isn’t much of a break at all.

Of course, an extra trip with friends to Vegas or Joshua Tree is fun, but it shoudn’t be a serious priority for the college to consider when scheduling, especially when those days could be put to better use. And those few days of Fall Break could. Ending Fall Break would make a week long Thanksgiving Break possible.*  This extension would give students more time to spend with their families.  Especially considering that many families travel for Thanksgiving, a longer break would make it easier to accommodate that travel.  There is clearly a huge demand for a longer Thanksgiving break considering the number of students that decide to leave campus early and the number of classes that are canceled the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. There’s even a Facebook group dedicated to the idiocy of class on Wednesday before Thanksgiving. It’d be better for students, their families, and even professors to extend Thanksgiving Break. Professors would not have to teach half empty classes, and with a longer break, they could give their students more time to prepare for what we all wish we had more time for: finals.

southwest screenEnding Fall Break to make Thanksgiving Break a week long would also allow people to purchase cheaper plane tickets home.  Look how cheap a Southwest flight home would be for me if I could leave on Monday (just $54, compared to $114 on Wednesday)! When one considers the thousands of students, faculty members, and administrators who fly to be with their families during Thanksgiving break, we are talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars of savings.  For the environmentalist, ending fall break would probably reduce the college’s carbon footprint as many students would travel back home one less time.

Instead of having two short breaks during fall semester that both only feel like extended weekends, let’s have a full-length holiday for Thanksgiving. If for no other reason… it’ll make your mother happy.

* My proposal would add one extra day of break, but, if we need to keep the exact same number of days off, we could simply start classes on Monday during Fall semester rather than Tuesday.

  1. This sounds good. From what I have heard the college’s accreditation requires a certain number of school days each year, so that’s why we can’t keep fall break while adding the week-long Thanksgiving break.

  3. While this proposal sounds good, something to consider is the bureaucracy involved with changing things. CMC can’t independently decide to alter break schedules — all 5Cs have to agree to alter the calendar. This means meetings, complaints, etc etc. More power to you if you can make it happen, but do remember that you have to have Pomona on board!

  5. fall break is actually longer than thanksgiving! ridiculous!

no one has class on fridays (and if you do, im sorry) so you can leave thursday night and come back tuesday night, but unless you’re down to skip wednesdays, thanksgiving is only a 4 day weekend. its basically only 1 day off, because, again, no one has friday class anyway. dumbest thing ever. it would kind of suck to have to go like 10 straight weeks without a break, though, especially when winter break is only a couple of weeks after thanksgiving. maybe we should just move thanksgiving

  7. I agree ! Extending Thanksgiving and bagging Fall break would make your mom and many parents happy. This would probably especially be appreciated by families who live a long distance away and currently can’t see their kids at this holiday.

  9. Keep fall break. It’s good having that day off to let you relax in the middle of the semester. Ten straight weeks of class would suck.

And it’s not like you can’t travel to the east coast for Thanksgiving. I flew to Florida last Thanksgiving and I’m planning on doing it again this year. I had plenty of time to spend with my extended family. Sure, you couldn’t fly home if home was India, but would you go home for a week, just three weeks before winter break, anyways?

  11. I say screw thanksgiving, spring break, and fall break. And lets reduce weekends to one day. Let’s have 5 months of Summer!! My god think of the internship possibilities?!

    • Clearly Andrew isn’t bright enough to see the parallels with the tray ban or the humor of the piece, which is what this was really about.

The point was that people don’t see the trade offs and ban things willy nilly!

      • I never want to hear you complain again about people attacking your character, Charles. You just called me stupid instead of responding to my post.

        Hypocrisy, for the win.

      • Technically, I responded, but hey, I’m just being descriptive. It’s you that took a perfectly innocuous and funny post and distorted it on the Forum.

But I grow weary of these little skirmishes, and will retire to my work.

it’s a bit late to try and take the high road CJ, and act like you never wanted to have this conversation. old timer was right. you guys should just share a gmail account, and send back and forth e-mails to yourselves. admittedly the entire forum’s readers will miss laughing at the caliber of your conversations, but it would cut down on the dumb posts.

half of the stuff on the forum now is your blog spam. if i wanted spam, I would go to L&L

  17. I really really really don’t care about charles vs. andrew anymore. Seriously go write your own personal emails to one another and stop using the forum as your own battle arena. Go away, I’ve lost respect for both of you over your mindless banter.

  19. If I were to hazard a guess, being a student myself, students having no school work to do for four days would tend to use a disproportionately huge amount of electricity. Which, if not consumed, could make green people smile way more than not taking a flight that was going to fly anyway.
As I see it, students staying on campus during break will use a huge amount of electricity, hence increasing the carbon emissions of the college. It would probably be more than flying back home. Even if it is not, commercial flights are going to fly regardless of whether kids from a 1000 student college fly home. However, if they are all at home, the college could save a significant amount of power. This should make our ‘global warming’ doomsday friends happy

  21. I heard that one reason most schools have a Fall Break of some sort is because the highest risk of suicide by freshmen is at around 7 or 8 weeks into the semester…
