Love Thy Neighbors

After four years of attending Claremont McKenna College, there’s one thing I’m certain of: The bitterness and stereotyping associated with the rivalries held between the Claremont Colleges is stupid.

My advice as a departing senior is to make friends at other colleges, take advantage of the resources at all the colleges, and appreciate that you aren’t at a tiny liberal arts college stranded by itself in the middle of nowhere.

Yes, certain members of the colleges do stupid things from time to time. Two years ago, Debra Wood, the Scripps College Dean of Students, sent an e-mail to the Scripps College student body complaining about a “racist party theme” at CMC held by the class of 2010. This party, hosted by Class President Isayas Theodros, encouraged students to wear white clothing because there would be a blacklight. Earlier that year, (mostly) Pitzer students engaged in a ridiculous protest of Karl Rove.  During that same year, Harvey Mudd’s Dean of Students made the bizarre decision to report to Campus Safety writing on a whiteboard that said “Hillary is a foxy lesbian.” Just recently, Pomona’s The Student Life published the wrong commencement speaker for CMC’s graduation this year.  For its part, CMC’s administration recently decided to ban non-CMC students, except for a guest list, from Thursday Night Club.

As unfortunate as these incidents are, they are clearly the exception and not the rule.  The reality, however, is that most of the people who attend the Claremont Colleges are good people. Sure there are jerks everywhere, but stereotyping across campuses is way too common at all of the 5Cs. Furthermore, almost all the stereotypes reflect the different colleges of 5-10 years ago much better than they reflect those institutions today. All of the 5Cs have similar values and fairly similar students and we cooperate in tons of academic, extracurricular, and social activities. There are important reasons a good percentage of Claremont Colleges students applied to multiple colleges, transferred between colleges, or take a lot of classes with mixed student populations.

The Claremont Colleges are excellent institutions, but we would all be even better if we integrated more and were less hostile towards one another. In my experience, most people at the end of the day seem to understand this and treat the rivalries as a fun tradition that amuses us. There are some people, however, who take these pointless rivalries way too far. They vandalize property, harass peers, or get in petty disputes with people from other colleges for really dumb reasons. Don’t be these people and don’t let your friends be these people.

Some of the worst things I’ve heard said at college involve CMC women berating Scripps women. Some pretty terrible 4-letter words are involved for seemingly no reason. One senior CMC woman once gave me the following advice without a hint of irony: “Do yourself a favor and never dabble in Scripps. Those c*nts will ruin you.”

I love CMC women and Scripps women equally. But seriously, ladies, why the hate? You’re all damn fine.

I still think those CHS (claremont high school) kids are elitist, hippie-wanna-be, computer nerd, feminist jocks.

To be honest, I think this moral standard can be applied inside the colleges as well.

I see alot of people who put down others, act like they have some moral superiority, or are some great or untouchable person just because they go here.

When I’ve been to other colleges, they have a different atmosphere than Claremont. I would even go as far as to say in some cases, more mature.

A lot of us behave as high school students who have never grown up and just have added alcohol into the mix.

Even better are the people in glass houses who shouldn’t be throwing stones. You state that the Claremont Colleges are excellent institutions. however, that does not mean that every person who goes here is excellent.

My point–these problems happen inter-collegiately as well, and people would do well to realize that just because they go here, they’re no better in terms of who they are than some people who go to any other college, even JCs.

Maybe people feel the need to pass judgement and stereotype because they feel that the 5cs give them some sort of moral superiority. Ego is a big deal these days apparently.

Also, I don’t know where you’ve been looking but I haven’t visited anywhere I think is any more or less mature than the 5Cs. Like Charlie said, there are good and bad everywhere. Just because you think the majority are egotistical, morally superior, glass-house-living elitists doesn’t mean that they are. Sounds like someone is stereotyping big time in an article about the overuse of stereotypes here. Glass house much?

      also just a grammar note:
its intra-collegiate for within oneself not inter, that implies between

Well, I’m basing it off several years of experience. I’m not in any glass house, I’m just saying that it’s the truth. I’m not saying that there’s a majority, just a lot of people that believe they’re hot stuff because they go here, or that it makes them so much better than someone else. When in fact, I know people who go to much less highly ranked institutions, or even JC’s that are 100x better as people than people who go here.

So when people start thinking so superiorly about themselves, they should look in a mirror and at themselves and who they are, first, not the college they go to.

It would kill off alot of the douchebaggery around here.

Thanks Charlie for clarifying that stereotypes are oversimplifications and that there’s a bad apple in every bunch.
