Hip Hop Might Save Our Lives

Dear CMC,

Every so often, ASCMC receives the opportunity to welcome the presence of a distinguished musical artist to help our students add to their long list of memorable college experiences.

On March 5, 2010, we will be doing just that, with the help of none other than Mr. “Kick Push” himself, Lupe Fiasco.

Just in time for his third studio album release, Lasers, we will be able to enjoy a show filled with new songs and classics alike.

Approximately one week from now, CMC students will be able to purchase tickets at $15, while 5C and public seating will available at $20 and $25, respectively.  CMC students may purchase one ticket per ID, with the opportunity to purchase up to one additional ticket for another CMC student if you bring their ID, as well as your own.

Also, look forward to a raffle for pit tickets so that you may collect Lupe’s sweat in a glass container during the show.

As a senior who is about to graduate, I am ironically only sure of a few things. One of the bullet points on my Post-It sized list of truths is that you must do everything in your power to make memories during your limited time at CMC.

So whether you are a fan of rap, rock, or reggae, identify the group of your most motivated friends, and prepare yourself to enjoy what will be a phenomenal show.

Love Always,

Isayas Theodros

I do think that Lupe is great alternative hip hop artist and I am sure that his show will be loads of fun, however I feel that CMC only books artists from one particular music genre. How about trying to book artists from varied music genres? Not all of us listen to rap/hip-hop/R&B.

Get it right, get it tight CMC.

Completely agreed. Although Lupe is better than the Cool Kids and Anthem, there are tons of good indie bands that come through the Glass House in Pomona. Why can’t we get any of them to play at Claremont? I mean, jesus, I have to go to Pitzer to see Matt and Kim? I bet you Passion Pit costs way less than Lupe.

      • Josh Siegel

        In a word, economics.

But ASCMC is doing a non-hip hop show on February 20th. Announcement of who it will be and details should come in a few days once it’s figured out, but it’ll probably be a smaller techno-type thing.

  • Really?

Another hip-hop artist? really? What happened to blink-182, Kings of Leon, or MGMT ……….. booo ASCMC.

    • Japanese Cartoon

Lupe is also in a punk band called Japanese Cartoon and his music is very different than most hip hop artists today. He often gets grouped with the other hip hop acts because he’s black, came from a poor background, etc.

And those bands you mentioned are absurdly expensive compared to Lupe. I wouldn’t pay $40 per ticket to go to a concert and I think it’s wise that ASCMC saw that and reacted appropriately.

Do you have any idea how much it costs to get KOL at CMC?

However, I would love to see some alt acts at CMC too.

ASCMC doesn’t really care about student input on these things.

  • Re: Hip-Hop Whining

    1) Landing Lupe is evidence that ASCMC does listen to you. He was one of the most requested artists by CMC students.

    2) +1 at Lewis. If you want Kings of Leon, be prepared to spend an arm, a leg, and a few of your friends’ arms and legs.

    3) Ditto MGMT.

Lupe is about as palatable an artist as we could hope to get. He appeals to fans of hip-hop, pop, and alternative music, and if that isn’t you, we’re sorry. There’s always Coachella.

Yea Coachella costs $100+ per day.

We pay over $50,000 a year to go to this school and we at least ask that you take into consideration what a plethora of students are listening to including alt, techno, folk, rock, indie, punk, pop and all of the other genres students listen to.

    • Irrelevant

You pay $50k to claremont mckenna college, not to ascmc. you pay like $200 in student fees for the entire year and that covers EVERYTHING– every single TNC, party, concert, club, publication, and student activity is funded with that money. if you don’t want to come to the concert, don’t come.

it sounds like this was an economic decision based on the need to sell enough tickets to break even. i wouldn’t go to some indie band and i dont think a lot of students here would go either. also, think about it, it’s a lot more expensive to bring in an equally popular indie band because there are more hotel rooms to pay for, people who need to make a salary, instruments, etc. a hip hop show is pretty cheap in comparison. but mostly, it’s a lot more popular than indie music at the five colleges.

just check out the 800 confirmed people that have joined the facebook event in the five hours since it went public

      or run for office.

      • http://www.purevolume.com/danielandthedragon Dan Evans

Okay, first of all, Lupe is a platinum-selling major label artist. Saying “equally popular indie band” is an oxymoron if you are referring to a band on an independent record label. If you’re talking about bands in the Indie style of music who are as popular as Lupe, well, I would challenge you to find one.

Second of all, hip hop music is pretty lame live compared to an actual band. Even the clip in the article is Lupe on stage, by himself, with some lights flashing. As mentioned before, there are tons of great bands in the LA area and even more who come through on tour. Why can’t we get groups akin to Passion Pit, Cut Copy, or Grizzly Bear?

Third: Lupe is signed to Atlantic Records. Because he is a major label artist, much of the costs of the concert will go to his record label, and there are certain contractual demands that need to be met by ASCMC. FIrst of all, it is very likely ASCMC will have to pay Fiasco’s booking agency an amount of money as insurance to even “play” the concert. Lupe is retiring soon, or some stupid thing like that, so that makes him even higher demand. The cost of bringing lupe to CMC is likely equal to or at least in the same ballpark as Kings of Leon or other major-label artists.

I’m currently trying to find out exactly how much this is costing ASCMC. I’ll be sure to report back if i hear anything.

      • Why so much hate?

Kings of Leon wanted over four times the amount that Lupe Fiasco cost ASCMC, according to my friend on the board. Tickets are subsidized to $15 for CMCers but are $25 for 5Cers. Do you really think they’d pay $100 to see kings of leon? The problem is that Bridges is too small so ticket prices would have to be ridiculously high. Also, ASCMC isn’t paying a booking company anything because they didn’t use one.

Some of the people you mentioned are playing at Coachella. They have a radius contract that prohibits them from playing anywhere in a 100 mile radius of Coachella for months in advance, which made booking a concert even harder than it already was. And read the comment about the Feb 20th event– it looks like there will be a non-hip hop show soon anyway.

You’re right that an “equally popular indie band” is an oxymoron. That’s why they didn’t book one — it wouldn’t sell enough tickets!

In summary, don’t go if you don’t want to go. The bitching (and your profile pic) is unappetizing.

      • http://www.purevolume.com/danielandthedragon Dan Evans

Well then, how much did Lupe cost? Kings of Leon wasn’t the only band on the survey sent around last semester. Just because they asked for more money doesn’t mean other popular bands would have been so expensive. If Lupe’s people were smart they would have signed a non-disclosure agreement with ASCMC, meaning we don’t get to know the cost anyways.

We haven’t had a rock group play at CMC in nearly two years. And you’re right about Bridges being so small, plenty of rock acts (indie or otherwise) could sell it out just as easy as Lupe could.

Its not bitching about Lupe (which I’ll be going to, I might add), its asking why ASCMC only brings rap and dance artists to campus, which I think is legitimate enough question that I attach my full name, website, and mug to it.

FYI- Some of the acts have actually played within a 100 mile radius months before Coachella. In fact, many of the bands play in L.A. within the days/weeks leading up to and after Coachella for practicality reasons (Vampire Weekend, Passion Pit, She & HIm, Thom Yorke, Julian Casablancas, Rusko… just to name a few).

Furthermore, I don’t see why people are getting hostel that some CMCers are voicing their true opinions about how they feel the are being unrepresented in their music choices, considering there is a big diversity of music listeners on campus. So stop attacking.

  • I Can’t Believe This!

ASCMC Sucks! I can’t believe they would work hard to bring a world famous rapper to a small liberal arts school like CMC.

They really must not care about the students!

Go to Kahoutek if you want to see Indie / electronic / etc… It’s really good every year, and I feel it is under publicized to whiny CMC students who demand that exact music.

People, be very very thankful that an extremely talented and well-known artist is coming to play for a tiny school of rich kids, and that you only have to pay $15 dollars.

Lupe is awesome live, from personal experience, and I had to pay around $60 to see him last time. I would do it again too. I’m so glad they didn’t get Kid Cudi too. Just Sayin. BIg ups Isayas.

    • Thank you, Consortium

Good point. If your music tastes are underrepresented at CMC, you might enjoy the parties and concerts PItzer arranges and opens to the 5Cs. It’s like complaining that all we have are econ classes… it’s what the majority wants, so it’s what the school delivers. You can take art history at Pomona.

any chance we could get some sort of mash up artist at CMC? make everyone happy with a fusion of hip hop and indie rock maybe? Girl Talk and E-603 do shows for college campuses across the U.S.

  • I’m from LA, trick

Irrelevant: “it sounds like this was an economic decision based on the need to sell enough tickets to break even.”

I think Jim Nauls’ desperation to sell Cool Kids and Ludacris tickets last semester was proof that the most recent artists invited to CMC have been BAD economic decisions. How many people from all 5 C’s showed up to the Cool Kids?? 100? Out of…. 5,000?

All of you need to stop living in your little sheltered bubbles and stop acting like you know the music tastes of most students at CMC because A LOT of us here are into indie as well. You chose to go to school in LA but are blatantly refusing to open up to the scene that is down here. Yes, there is always Coachella (which isn’t going to be subsidized), but to those of you that just assume that it’s just some indie gathering, think again and look at the lineup. Last time I checked, Jay-Z was definitely NOT indie. I think the amount of CMC students that are willing to pay to go to Coachella without being subsidized shows, with “economics”, the variety of tastes it appeals to.

    • no

cool kids was free, no tickets were sold. and i heard about 1000 people showed up throughout the day but it looked like fewer because the area was so huge. it was not meant to be profitable and it was not paid for by ascmc or dos, it was split by the five colleges. and ludacris did quite well on ticket sales (a look around the theater showed that).

i think the survey put out by ascmc asking people to indicate their music tastes is exactly what led to lupe being picked. for that, i applaud the decision. and lupe is amazing in concert.

      • Lupe fan

I love Lupe and ASCMC’s decision to get him but seriously dude. That post is straight up propaganda. Cool Kids was aight but they came on hella late and I think there were maybe 100 people there. People did circle in and out, but it was sort of like showing up to an early TNC where you go in for a few minutes, see that nobody is there, and leave.

And from what I hear, Luda lost the school a bunch of money, like in the high 4 to low 5 figure range, though I don’t have the numbers to back that up.
