Chronologically speaking you are correct.

Problem is, of course, that “Secret Diary” is not a mashup album in the sense that Girl Talk’s later albums are. I challenge you to listen to a track (here’s one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_D0jWV09vI) and tell me that it’s the type of work that inspired other remix artists like Danger Mouse. Fact of the matter is Girl Talk’s earliest albums are experimental sound collages, and can hardly be classified as mashups.

“Nevermind, of course, that even Gillis was borrowing ideas from a genre formed by predecessors including Danger Mouse, The Kleptones, and the Grammy-winning Jay-Z/Linkin Park collaboration on “Numb/Encore.”

Girl Talk’s first album came out in 2002. That was before Danger Mouse, Kleptones, or Numb/Encore.

He may “just be a DJ” but as anyone who has seen him live can attest, he puts on a really enjoyable show. You got to give the AS groups of Pomona and CMC credit for getting someone decent for harwood this year. Past years have been, forgettable.
