Basic message, everyone: Time to get a thermos unless you really want to pay 80 cents extra for your drink. This is a gift. It's 20 cents cheaper now.

I agree that there are only so many ways to describe the Motley's new policy and I definitely do not think you stole anything from the Port Side.

Your article is very different from Mark's, which was an opinion piece based upon the information from the managers, information from Scripps, and his own views on environmentalism.

Yours was a "just the facts" article based on the information provided by the managers at the Motley that explained the change.

Each was entirely appropriate for the publication for which it was written, and unless you have specific proof you should not be accusing folks of plagiarism.

I think a broader question being raised is the extent to which the Forum syndicates or links to other campus publications. That is an editorial decision for Abhi and Emily to make and it is not my place to criticize or question them. Just remember that editorial decisions are fair game. An author's integrity is not.

I am upset that such a simple news article is causing so many negative responses. My article simply summarizes the points made in a statement released by the Motley sent to me by Alana MacWhorter, a Motley manager. The Port Side and the the Forum both had access to the same document, and both used it as a basis for their reporting.

I was asked by Alana to not release the information until after Sunday night, when the Motley employees would be informed of the change. This article was meant to be a simple reporting piece that would inform the student body about the new policy. Since Mark and I both had access to the same information and reported about the same policy change, it's obvious that the two articles will contain similar phrasing. Similar phrasing is NOT plagiarism. How many ways can you say "the Motley will now be charging an extra dollar for to-go cups?"

I did not give credit to the Port Side because I did not get any of the information in my article from the Port Side. All of my reporting comes directly from managers.

Are you serious??? The only thing that's the same in the two articles are the titles and the mention of the new cafe at Honnold-Mudd, but other than that the reporting could not be more different. The Portside piece is biased and the author reports with a harsh tone, whereas this Forum piece is unbiased and straight-to-the-point while offering a SUBTLE critical eye.

Guess,

I'm not a huge fan of the Port Side, but there's not even a link! Give credit where credit is due.

Perhaps the Forum needs an ombudsman...
