Motley To Charge for To-Go Cups
The Motley Coffeehouse announced Sunday night that it will be changing its to-go cup policy in an effort to encourage sustainability on campus. Beginning October 21, the Motley will charge an extra dollar for all drinks in Motley-provided to-go cups. Discontinuing the previous policy of discounting customers who bring in their own mugs, the coffeehouse is lowering the base price of all drinks by twenty cents.
In a statement outlining the reasoning behind the change, the Motley managers defend the change, calling it an alignment with its semester goals and mission statement by “promoting environmental and socially conscious business practices.” Although the to-go cups are biodegradable, less than 5% of Motley cups are properly disposed of in composting bins. If the cups aren’t composted, they sit in landfills just like any other disposable product.
All profits generated by the to-go cup policy will go directly to the Motley sponsorship program, which gives “funding for individuals and groups to pursue their own projects.” Those that cannot afford to buy a mug of their own can apply for a small grant through the sponsorship program.
Ultimately, the Motley hopes that the extra charge will encourage customers to bring their own mugs or stay and enjoy their drinks at the coffeehouse. The plan may backfire, as not all students want to linger at the Motley or carry and wash their own coffee containers. Instead, a sizable portion of Motley customers stop by for a quick and convenient caffeine fix between classes or before heading to the library. These students may not be willing to pay the extra fee or bring their own cups, especially with the proximity of Peet’s Coffee at Pomona, Starbucks, and the newly opened café in Honnold Mudd. Service can already be slow at the Motley, and the new policy may further discourage patronage from rushed students.
The Motley will be hosting a public forum to discuss the change and receive feedback. You can also email motley@scrippscollege.edu with questions and comments.

OMG! the portside got the scoop on this like 2 days ago! it's THEIR story--they OWN it!

They did get the scoop two days ago but it's not their story if the Forum can add new facts or insight. But there really isn't anything here that wasn't in the Port Side's article and it is strikingly similar.
The Forum has again failed to show the common courtesy of linking and giving credit to others for their work. Even Charles Johnson has that one down pat.

Seeing as the portside article was literally a pile of bias on top of lies stacked on misinformation, this article was a nice summary in comparison. It presented the issue without rampant bias and one sided analysis. Kudos for not stooping to the portside's level.

The article was biased in the sense that Mark expressed his opinion. You are free to disagree with him and even respond in the comments if you think his reasoning was poor or if he missed something important.
There was an error about where the new revenue stream would be directed which was clearly corrected. I don't think that mistake constituted "lies stacked on top of misinformation."
If you would like to provide one sided analysis in support of the change, shoot me an email and I am confident that we will publish your views as well.

Are you all really getting that riled up about this article? It's just a really well researched, well written portrayal of an important policy change at the Motley, not something for bored CMC kids to bash and pissed off Portsiders to cry foul on. Are we all really that bored and unable to recognize a simple informative article for what it is? Shame, you did awesome Alex.

Good, concise article (and the photo is very clever). This news will definitely have a negative impact on the frequency of my Motley trips.
I think the Hub should invest in a higher quality coffee machine/espresso maker(maybe even something comparable to the Motley's). The Hub has become way more legit this year, especially with the expanded meal replacement plan, and adding more "gourmet" coffee options would be extremely profitable given the Hub hours and growing foot traffic.

If this were submitted to the committee it would get calls of plagiarism. Not only is the title the same, but the content and even some of the sentences are the same as the Port Side's article.
Its fine to get info out, but at least use more than the copy/paste feature

Are you serious??? The only thing that's the same in the two articles are the titles and the mention of the new cafe at Honnold-Mudd, but other than that the reporting could not be more different. The Portside piece is biased and the author reports with a harsh tone, whereas this Forum piece is unbiased and straight-to-the-point while offering a SUBTLE critical eye.

Guess,
I'm not a huge fan of the Port Side, but there's not even a link! Give credit where credit is due.
Perhaps the Forum needs an ombudsman...

I am upset that such a simple news article is causing so many negative responses. My article simply summarizes the points made in a statement released by the Motley sent to me by Alana MacWhorter, a Motley manager. The Port Side and the the Forum both had access to the same document, and both used it as a basis for their reporting.
I was asked by Alana to not release the information until after Sunday night, when the Motley employees would be informed of the change. This article was meant to be a simple reporting piece that would inform the student body about the new policy. Since Mark and I both had access to the same information and reported about the same policy change, it's obvious that the two articles will contain similar phrasing. Similar phrasing is NOT plagiarism. How many ways can you say "the Motley will now be charging an extra dollar for to-go cups?"
I did not give credit to the Port Side because I did not get any of the information in my article from the Port Side. All of my reporting comes directly from managers.

I agree that there are only so many ways to describe the Motley's new policy and I definitely do not think you stole anything from the Port Side.
Your article is very different from Mark's, which was an opinion piece based upon the information from the managers, information from Scripps, and his own views on environmentalism.
Yours was a "just the facts" article based on the information provided by the managers at the Motley that explained the change.
Each was entirely appropriate for the publication for which it was written, and unless you have specific proof you should not be accusing folks of plagiarism.
I think a broader question being raised is the extent to which the Forum syndicates or links to other campus publications. That is an editorial decision for Abhi and Emily to make and it is not my place to criticize or question them. Just remember that editorial decisions are fair game. An author's integrity is not.

Basic message, everyone: Time to get a thermos unless you really want to pay 80 cents extra for your drink. This is a gift. It's 20 cents cheaper now.
