Just to throw my hat in the ring, I suppose, the type of comprehensive web re-design that Rodner plans on doing takes a good deal of planning. Having helped the University of Montana's School of Business Administration re-build their website from the ground up this summer, I can say from experience that developing a web format where its easy to manage content is a very tedious process.

Let's hope that something better is in the works.

Yeah I realized it came off as attacking the article's writer, but I didn't mean to do that. It was more the premature presumption of improvement that bothered me.

I just don't understand why Richard Rodner, who hasn't done anything visibly positive on the website since he's been here, is being heralded as a Web 2.0 visionary (maybe an exaggeration) for acknowledging the problems with our website and pledging to fix them.

Acknowledging a problem is an easy thing to do; only when it's fixed should he get credit.

Also, the post wasn't an opinion piece-- it was in the news section.

"I don't know what the news is in this article."--That was an asshole comment, Josh. A lot of the articles in the Forum are well-written opinion pieces (like this one), and it's beyond the scope of the Forum to write about earth-shattering news.

The CMC site really is embarassing because it's so inadequate, and it would probably be enough to deter me if I was a prospie.

Do you know how the administration is expecting us to collaborate? There doesn't seem to be an effective way to set up the blogs and things it said that it wanted on the CMC site, and interested people may not know how to help.

I'm not convinced that CMC has the right staff or expertise to accomplish anything impressive with the website. We've been hearing "next semester" or "next year" for the past three plus years. It's an easy promise to make and not keep, instead blaming roadblocks and problems on outside consultants and budget cuts.

Even if we do see improvement on cmc.edu next semester, web innovation is not a game of "catch up". Looking to what other schools are doing (Northeastern, Colby, etc.) and emulating them is a recipe for continually being left behind.

Why don't we aim to be the best college website? It's just a matter of money, time and expertise. Bates and Northeastern don't have more of any of that than we do.
