White Party Cost ASCMC $20,000

Due to unforeseen expenses and lower than expected revenues, the total expense for ASCMC’s White Party, featuring DJ AN21, was $20,000.

ASCMC’s Chief Financial Officer, Kevin Sullivan ’12 noted that the original target, set in September, was a $4000 expense.  A few weeks before the party, in late February, party planners realized it was going to cost more than expected and adjusted target expenses to around $8000.

To account for the unexpected extra $12,000 in expenses, Sullivan explained that the lighting for AN21’s set cost $6000 more than anticipated and that the artist fees to bring AN21 were $2,000 more than originally expected. Additionally, ticket revenues were $6000 lower than expected, with about 400 fewer tickets sold than initially intended.

Overall, the White Party resulted in a $20,000 net expense: roughly $36,200 in total expenses while the total revenue was $16,200.

Last year’s ASCMC sponsored concert featuring LMFAO resulted in a $25,000 expenditure, and the year before that Lupe Fiasco’s performance ended in a $50,000 expense. Though each year marks a decrease in expense, the high annual cost raises the question of whether or not this type of event should continue on or, at the very least, be scaled back.  “The White Party was a very expensive success,” said ASCMC President Aditya Pai ’13.  ”It provided great benefit to students, but at great cost. The question going forward for everyone to consider is whether the benefit justifies the cost – or whether we should pursue other options.”

ASCMC conducted a poll to gauge student body’s response that indicated that over 60% of all respondents considered White Party among their top two favorite parties of the year.

“Undoubtedly the White Party was a success,” said Steven Limandibhratha ’14, Social Affairs Chair (SAC), “According to the responses on the survey, over 30% placed the White Party as their favorite party of the year, and over 60% placed the party in their top two parties.

“Regarding the significant expense of the party, I believe working with the new board, we will be able to reduce these expenses in the future,” Limandibhratha commented,

When asked if the party was worth the money, freshman Liza Farr responded, that depends on what one’s priorities are. “White Party was really fun, a bunch of people went out for it and danced like crazy in a cool location with awesome lights and a fantastic DJ,” she said. “However, it did cost [ASCMC] a lot of money while it didn’t seem all that different from any of other, much cheaper parties.  I don’t think it was worth the immense amount of money spent on it.”

These numbers are all over the place…am I the only one who’s still confused?

The pie chart is a bit off, I think

      • Moe

My bad, pie chart doesn’t include revenue

I think the question going forward is how much money ASCMC is going to waste just so that we can all watch them dance like fools in their fenced off “VIP” area. I don’t remember even seeing DJ AN21?

ascmc, stop acting like functioning retards and bring rizzle kicks next year.

  • Leaders in the Making of BS

Pai has never sounded like more of a politician.

    • Stag

      Seriously.

  • CMCer

Since when was the scripps parking lot a “cool location”?

  • Steph

Peeps also need to realize that making counterfeit wristbands will only screw them over in the future as ASCMC will have less monies to spend on cooler things. I have heard estimates from makers that there were like 100+ made. Don’t do it!!!!

    • Atticus Finch

I agree. You should just jump the fence instead.

  • really???

$20,000 for a DJ no one had heard of before this? And a $6,000 set?????

    • #thiscountry

Have to f***ing agree, $20,000 for the supposed bargain basement act. Puhhhhhhlease. For an act who’s best talents were uses of smoke machines, I think ASCMC could’ve just asked DJ S**t2ITION to do it for free and free itself from its seemingly annual idiot dance.

  • Forum Hall of Famer

I want my compulsory ASCMC fee back. I haven’t gotten a single dollar’s worth this year. Refute at me, bro.
Swedish House Mafia is a joke (yes, yes, I did see them at Coachella, unfortunately). So what does that make one THIRD of that group’s sibling??????? What’s one third of a joke? I’m not sure how to say it, but I think it’s spelled like this: AN21.

    • marco

“Swedish House Mafia is a joke.”

      And there goes your credibility.

      • Wildorkid7

If you knew true EDM meaning pre-bro era, meaning now, you’d know that Swedish House Mafia is a bunch of mainstream sellouts like Tiesto and Guetta.

        • Polo

oh god…there are edm hipsters now too?

  • Anyone else baffled?

Let me try to understand this progression: original budget $4000…then the budget gets doubled to $8000, which is already a no-no as budgets go……then the party comes out to $36,200….that is 8.5 times the original budget?…. whoever was in charge of this party should be drawn and quartered. 8 point 5 TIMES THE ORIGINAL BUDGET!!! How does it happen that some “leader” doesn’t step in and call this off at some point? How does this get swept under the rug? There was obviously no interest in this party – it was thrown by guys who wanted to hang out with a C list electro artist… here’s a tip: next time just grab a yellow book and call him, this guy is not busy 6-7 days per week…Any given weekend night in LA there are 10+ comparable acts. This is actually baffling.

The stats on this being a lot of people’s favorite party is actually one of the most indicting figures of all – doesn’t this just mean the parties in general suck? Or am I the only one that didn’t realize that there hasn’t been a new big theme party in 3-4 years. Limandithabrabatha it’s time to step up big man… it’s time to stop pawning responsiblity off by asking the student body for ideas over schoolwide email. Step up, or you’ll be the third SAC strike in a row, and we’ll all be out.

    • Steven Limandibhratha

      I hear you

    • Andrew Oetting

      Why don’t
you volunteer to throw a party, or plan one, or even just clean up afterwards?
Why don’t you (and other people who love to complain anonymously on the Forum)
      either

      a) run for
      ASCMC office,

      b) or if you
think ASCMC is dysfunctional, find a way to contribute something of value to
our community besides your Forum ranting.

      If you do
contribute, so sorry for my mistake! You didn’t sign your name so I didn’t know
      it was you :(

      How
delusional are you that you think Will Brown somehow “pawn[ed] responsibility
off by asking the student body for ideas over school wide email”.
Attempting to gauge what the student body wants is skirting his responsibility?
To use your own words, “baffling.”

      “There
was obviously no interest in this party – it was thrown by guys who wanted to
hang out with a C list electro artist.” First, 1100 tickets were sold,
while this was less than anticipated, it represents about 20% of the 5C population.
Also, as one of the guys you probably are referring to, I can assure you the
last thing I wanted to do was hang out with some Swedish dude and his loser
friends. We spent all day setting up that party because we wanted to have fun
with our classmates and continue a tradition which many CMCers (and students
      from other campuses) enjoy.

      I find it so
ironic how outraged people get here on the Forum. A few of you continue to
condemn people like Will Brown and Seth Winterroth who literally spent 20+
      hours a week serving
you. They plan your parties, buy your alcohol and then pull all nighters for
days on end so they could finish their school work. What do you do? You, or
your parents, or financial aid contributes $235 on your account. You don’t
think you get $235 worth? Think you could have wheelbarrows of fun if you were
given that back and took it to LA so you could watch the “10+ comparable
acts”? Good luck. You pay less than a dollar a day for the benefits ASCMC
provides…even Chris Temple and Zach Ingrasci can’t make a dollar a day look
      like fun.

      Listen, I’m
not saying if you don’t want to get involved on campus that’s a problem. Many
people have bigger and better things to do than plan parties or attend ASCMC Senate.
But if you do have better things to do, don’t come on the Forum and complain
about the people who spent their time trying to add value to your life. If you
have a problem show your face at an Executive Board meeting, or an ASCMC Senate
meeting, or give one of the Board members a call. Otherwise, just keep it to
      yourself.

        Andrew,

How noble of you to defend ASCMC…

Home boy, Your arguments are all Pathos and no Ethos. You also venture off on some tangent and do not even address the real issue. How can we blow a budget by 8.5 times the original amount? Rather than trying to defend such an epic waste of money, You along with ASCMC should try taking some responsibility.
