CMC “Happiest College in America”

Claremont McKenna ranked #1 in the Daily Beast survey on happiness.

No surprise. The Daily Beast released its ranking yesterday of the “100 Happiest Colleges in America,” and Claremont McKenna came out on the very top. CMC was followed by Harvard, Pomona and Rice.

The blog’s methodology measures the quality of student life using a mix of data from College Prowler, a popular college review series, and U.S. News & World Report College Rankings, the premiere college ranking source. Between the two, the Daily Beast rankings take into account campus housing, dining and nightlife, student indebtedness and retention rate, the number of clubs on campus, and the weather climate.

Take a look at the full rankings here, as well as the most stressed out colleges in the country here.

“…the number of clubs on campus”

The question on everyone’s minds: Will the downfall of our most beloved club, the Thursday Night Club affect our ranking?

B- for nightlife? They must not be considering how much the school does to enhance nightlife rather than what outside sources provide, meaning Harvard has a better nightlife rating than we do because they have Boston at their immediate disposal, while we have… Claremont.

    • hmmmm

Yup, other places probably have more highly ranked nightlife because there are awesome clubs, etc, in the town(s) surrounding them than CMC. Vast campuses are better for higher quality nightlife rather than close quarter shitshows–

–not that I don’t like it, but it’s why Stanford has a better nightlife rating than we do.

  • Love CMC but…

Everyone really buying into the Claremont bias??? CMC #1, Pomona #3, Mudd #5, and Scripps #6? I don’t think I’ve ever seen half of Scripps’ student body smile. Rankings too heavily based on student self-reporting. Harvey Mudd got an A on housing for example even though their dorms are disguised as junkyards. Conclusion: it’s all about personal preferences, be happy…who cares.

The 5-Cs share a few common traits: great weather, a slew of clubs, and way-above-average dorms and dining options (yes, even Mudd, where the rooms are large and comfortable with lots of natural light, until Mudders destroy them). These are all elements which contribute significantly to student happiness. I am not the least bit surprised to see us dominating a list like this.

      Count me as bought-in.

I drank the Kool-Aid. This place is a happiness factory.

Please don’t misunderstand me; I work until my stomach is knotted and my brain is numb. I know this place is tough, and it’s going to get harder.

But Man is it worth it.

I must admit what I have long secretly known, which is that I positively like stress, arrange to inflict it on myself, and sheer awkwardly away from anybody who tries to promise me a more soothed or relaxed existence. – Christopher Hitchens
