Comcast to merge with Time Warner Cable. Comcast agreed to purchase Time Warner Cable for $45 billion this week. The move will allow one firm to control more fast Internet lines into homes, giving the new combined company 33 million consumers and almost as many broadband users. Many regulators have questioned the move, asking whether the combined company will be anti-competitive.

Federal judge rules gay marriage ban unconstitutional. On Thursday, a federal district judge in Virginia struck down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, claiming that the amendment violated equal protection under the constitution. The decision focuses on the distinction between religious faith and secular laws. U.S. District Judge Arenda L. Wright Allen, who decided the case, first made history in 2011 when she become the first black woman nominated to serve as a federal district judge in Virginia.

Kickstarter hacked. Earlier this week, hackers gained access to some Kickstarter costumers’ data. The crowd-funding site is used by millions of people to raise money for creative projects and businesses. Kickstarter CEO Yancey Strickler urged customers to change their passwords, though Strickler said there was no evidence of unauthorized activities thus far.

EARTHQUAKE. Residents of South Carolina and Georgia felt a 4.1-magnitude earthquake late Friday. At 10:23 p.m., the quake centered seven miles west of Edgefield, S.C. and was felt as far as Atlanta and into North Carolina. While many residents called in to report the movement, no major damage has been reported. The earthquake came at the end of an unusually cold winter.

Jumping fences to make Valentines day. An Arizona inmate escaped jail on Friday in order to spend Valentine’s Day with his girlfriend. Joseph Andrew Dekenipp went missing from a fenced recreation yard at a detention center in Florence. County deputies were able to find Dekenipp at a nearby bar within three hours, when he was returned to the jail. Deckenipp had been put in jail last month on various charges, including suspected car theft and suspended license. He now faces an escape charge.
