Not to be a super-hipster (my consistent sweatpants use probably disqualifies me outright) or an indie music head (I'm still listening to Digitalism's newest album as though it didn't come out years ago), but I'm pretty sure that to many people, mash-ups are actually the music of the past. These days, if you head down to the catacombs of Pomona for Table Manners or the underground clubs of Melbourne for a 4am dance festival, you'll find music that certainly derives partially from the mash-up mania of years past but also feeds on the inability of most people to dance to such a glitchy, ever-changing beat and volatile musical style. Instead, you find super-fast bpm drum n bass style music that incorporates quiet tidbits of quotes from multiple songs but plays none of their beats predominantly. The only way to dance to it is to frantically bounce around, much in the way that people have been doing already in substitution for the more 80s-style dance moves allowed (and kinda-quasi-required, in my opinion) by mash-ups, which have a far slower tempo. Basically, music is finding a frenetic pseudo-house mash-up based (as opposed to the more housey song-transitional based) style that honestly scares the crap out of me. And is, reading over my post, almost impossible to describe.
