New Claremont Port Side Issue

The Claremont Port Side, Claremont’s progressive/liberal magazine, just published a new issue and it is available online at claremontportside.com.

1) The most relevant article to CMCers is Michael Wilner’s piece on CMC’s future potential expansion east into Upland.
Summary: While construction to the east of CMC is controversial, this would shorten the drive to In N Out.

2) Andrew Bluebond wrote a piece on bias-related incidents at the Claremont Colleges.
Summary:  CMC students are entitled to freedom of speech and all that, except in cases of harassment, yelling fire in crowded theater, etc.  Also, the administration is free to send out e-mails about bias-related incidents.

Side note: It can be hard to determine what constitutes harassment, which has been a point of contention by some students recently.

Budget constraints happened, my friend. I have to be sure that we can publish throughout the year. I don’t want to blow our entire budget in the first semester.

The replacement of the current baseball field would be a travesty for everyone
in the CMS community. I am not a part of the team, but I have traveled around
the sciac to watch baseball games, and CMC has the best field, HANDS DOWN. The
natural setting, the silhouette of the trees, the hill in left field, the ivy
surrounding the stands… its way too spectacular to demolish for the purpose of
    CMCs expansion.
Furthermore, why does the College intend to expand so
extensively? We have excelled in our pursuit of collegiate excellence -
wouldn’t we be abandoning our fundamental advantages over other schools by
growing the student body and throwing up parking garages and dorms all over the
    place?

I am strongly opposed to these propositions. We should spend our money
on the quality of educational experiences within our current setting.

  • Claremont Port Side’s CMC’s PR

They did come out with more than one issue. It was just passed out at the new school in Singapore!

The CI receives a lot of extra funding from private sources, namely, conservative alumni. Let’s face it, CMC used to be a very conservative school, so a lot of our alumni are conservative and would like to see the College stay that way, and like to give to the CI to help push it back towards that direction.

In a couple of years, the alumni base will be more ideologically balanced, I’m sure, and hopefully those more progressive graduates will give as much as the conservative ones do.

Gosh golly. I sure have so many people who think I come on this site a lot!

I didn’t write anything on here about the Port Side this time around, altho now that I know they’re having a hard time making ends meet, I feel somewhat guilty for using it to paper my bird cage.

As for the above comment, how do you know who what our finances are like?
