Attention: Class of 2013

Class of 2013, we know you’re already reading this. You’re excited, nervous, antsy, scared, and curious. You’re freshmen. To help you navigate your first few weeks, here are a few pointers. It’s long, but live with it. It’s free advice.

Get smart. Read the New York Times or some other reputable news source daily. Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, whatever… learn to be an informed human being.  Professors will expect this from you, and general campus conversation will demand it.  Bonus points for Real Clear Politics, which pulls the best editorial and opinion content (from both sides) daily. Or even better, start using Google Reader.

Big fish in a little sea. So you were a hotshot at your hometown high school.  If you started a company, were student body president, or directed a Broadway play at the age of 6– that is awesome and you clearly have your stuff together, but it can easily rub your new peers the wrong way.  Be proud of your accomplishments, but leave them behind in Akron/Modesto/Westchester. We were all pretty impressive during high school, otherwise we wouldn’t be at CMC. Use those experiences; don’t talk about them. You’ll be more productive and probably even have more friends.woa

Love your WOA trip. I met my best friend and she met her boyfriend on our trip to Yosemite. If you attend a WOA trip (some don’t), this an automatic set of friends for you doing your first few weeks.  You’re not bound to this group of people (like Pomona students are to their Sponsor Groups), but it’s a nice safety net. While you’re hiking, canoeing, or playing beirut (with water, of course), just remember that first impressions make all the difference.

Free T-shirt Week. Otherwise known as Orientation Week and Dry Week.  The aforementioned best friend and I made it our goal to collect as many free t-shirts as possible during this week.  With all the budget cuts at CMC, the swag-factor may be slightly reduced at these events, but get ready to expand your t-shirt collection by at least 25 percent. To round out the week, there’s 6:01– the party to celebrate the precise end of Dry Week.  It really is as glorious as everyone says it is.

Overachievers anonymous. There’s a club fair in early September where all the clubs and organizations will try to convince you to join their cause.  The greatest part is not how many clubs there are –but the opportunity for leadership positions. A sophomore can be the Editor-in-Chief of a publication. A freshman can be a delegate to a national environmental conference. Get involved and stay committed, your resume will thank you.

Chill out with the Target runs. You really don’t need that much stuff at school. Every superstore — and your mother — will be trying to get you to buy dorm room stuff that you don’t need.  Think about it this way when you’re standing in line with two shopping carts full of stuff: the hottest weeks of the year are during move-in and move-out.  Do you really need that striped area rug that matches your bedspread?

What you guys should most look forward to is that you won’t be treated like the scum-of-the-earth freshmen that you are.  When I started at CMC, I was terrified to venture out to the Senior Apartments during my first week, but the upperclassmen were overwhelmingly friendly and welcoming.  It is our duty to spread goodwill and pay it forward to you guys. Good luck!

Akron’s first shout out on the Forum, woot. Sorry, Emily. That was my take away from your piece. As soon as I read my city’s name, I feel the need to talk about… damn. I think I just made your point.

Great article Emily! I second your advice on staying up-to-date with current affairs (especially through an rss feed reader) and on leaving your accomplishments in Akron/Modesto/Westchester (Ha!). College is about looking to the future not dwelling on past accomplishments.

My other piece of advice that I never did but always wish I did is to say hi to people.

At CMC, walking around you are seeing people you know all the time. Say hi to people you have met as you walk by. Saying hi to anyone you know their name is appropriate not just the ones you are “good friends” with.

This solidifies your acquaintances from last night’s drunken forays into actual friends.

Try 5:01. or is it 4:01?

  • Josh

It’s September 5th @ 6:01 PM this year. I’ve never thought 6:01 was that big of a deal though… there will be many better parties than 6:01.

The advice for transfers varies a bit. I didn’t come to CMC until my sophomore year and didnt go on WOA. If you’re a transfer, I’d suggest talking to other transfers about what it was like for them– the experience varies.

The advice for athletes is also pretty different than advice for people who go on WOA (most fall athletes can’t go) and have the time to be super-involved in extracurriculars. But athletes have a whole team of upperclassmen to rely on for advice.

I agree with most of this though I don’t think reading what the NYTimes is putting out lately will make you smart… what you follow will vary depending on your major and interests. RealClearMarkets, WSJ, FT are good if you’re into business, finance, and all that. TechCrunch, GigaOm are good if you’re into technology (maybe that’s just me). If you’re into sports you already know what to follow– just don’t make SportsCenter, ESPN, and the latest on Michael Vick the only thing you know.

    Josh Siegel, so wise

  • Joe

Josh Siegel, the WISEST. AND he’s too cool for 6:01. One thing though…do you not agree with or find interesting the breakdown of hugs by type? Comfort issues?

Good article though. I would also advise freshmen not to be afraid of the elders at CMC. (Almost) Everyone is nice, willing to get to know you, and has good advice about CMC life in general.

    • Josh Siegel

Hahaha I was going to comment on how some transfers have to live with uppity soccer freshmen like Joe Swartley… or how 6:01 will be run by some uppity soccer freshman this year… but I refrained (6:01 will be great though)

Em Mein, I commend you for your pieces of advice. Big fish in a little sea is entirely applicable: last week of August 2006 and Shae [no middle name] Blood feels as if her peers are incessantly trying to one-up her. Gross. No fun. Keep your eyes set for the future.

However, I am going to have to admit that I myself was and still am an avid Target shopper.

JSiegel: 601 will be an epic endeavor and I will be entitled to any and all dance moves.

  • Dear Freshmen

Here is another thing to know before you get to campus: Charles Johnson has to say something about everything and just about everybody from every political perspective finds him to be more of an annoyance than anything else. He may seem like an outsized character on the internet, but once you get to campus you will understand.

    • Madison

I’m a bleeding heart liberal but even I don’t think the Huffington Post is not a reputable source– and this is coming from someone who LOVES Ariana H (such a lovely woman).

Love FT. Love NYT, regardless of what Josh says. Actually love news.bbc.co.uk for quick snippets. Vogue.com (of course… I heard they’re going through a revamp… could be cool) and NY Mags blog, The Cut for fashion news.

Also, don’t wear the free tshirts you get at events in public. Unless you want to look like everyone else. I tell you, it’s only CMC where students where t-shirts from their school on campus. It’s just so tacky. So much better to wear plain white tees from Hanes or something. Also, please don’t try to “customize” the free tshirts you get and wear them– sooo tacky.

      • Madison

Sorry to reply to my own post but for clarification i do NOT think huff po is a reputable source.

It’s fun to read though! Much like Glamour magazine can be fun to read.

      @Dear Freshmen,

You’ll notice that there are a lot of haters of me for some irrational reason. Few of these people actually know me in real life. I recommend you make your own judgments by you know, talking to me. Don’t believe the hype.

  • Seriously?

Do we seriously need to have Charles Johnson smeared in every freaking post on the Forum? He’s an interesting person, no doubt, but leave him alone already. There are better things to do at CMC than taint freshmen minds with irrelevant drivel.

    • internets

Nah, all they have to do is read craigslist.

      • if only…

…someone had bothered to take screenshots

      • Craig

I’m not CJ’s biggest fan but don’t knock someone down for using a dating site, or even a sex site. Now you’re just being mean and a bully. Plenty of CMCers use craigslist, and others use more reputable dating sites.

    • B

Not anyone’s fault but his. You put yourself out there like that, and burn bridges when it suits him, then he’s fair game. He certainly does enough of insulting anyone he wants to…

      • http://claremontconservative.com Charles C. Johnson

How am I fair game? By having my own opinions? And what bridges did I burn?

I think it’s more likely that people can’t respond to my arguments so they make things personal. Often people who are intolerant of heterodox ideas feel the need to go after people personally. I know that it’s often a good tactic to demonize someone with whom you disagree politically — Saul Alinksy would be proud — but it’s a lazy way out.

I understand the efforts to go after me personally, but really, you should let the freshmen make up their own opinions about CMC and those who attend it — if only so they can make their own prejudices. It’s a courtesy you were extended, after all, why not extend it to others?

Great advice! Another suggestion for the freshmen: go to as many Ath dinners as you can, and try to get a seat at the head table to dine with the speaker. I didn’t really start doing this until the end of sophomore year. And yes, it’s arguably unfair that anyone can attend a head table for a subject they know nothing about as long as they sign up first, but until that changes, one could (oh for example) be a science major with no knowledge whatsoever of journalism in Poland and meet Adam Michnik. CMC gets a lot of exciting guest speakers and there’s no excuse for not knowing about it, as the Fortnightly schedule will be in your mailbox each semester.

    Welcome 2013:

Supposedly, smarter and more talented–but are you wiser and more good looking?

Seriously, Emily really did justice to telling it how it is, good job Meinhardt. I would like to second Emily’s point, “Use those experiences; don’t talk about them.” Sure, it is common to talk about past experiences and tell people who you are–but high school is over–welcome to college (that too, one of the best in the world). People here want to meet genuine people, not people who rattle of their resume at every opportunity. Another beautiful thing about college is you can be friends with whomever you like (BONUS: they probably will be famous in the future), and you will relate and clash with people on some of the most unexpected things. Remember we are all growing up and in this together–there is a big bad world outside CMC–that I am personally nervous about, but CMC has me feeling super prepared to make that journey next year.

A notable PPE alum Jake Zimmerman ’96 wrote to Gann (l like his tone) about what makes CMC so special–I REALLY THINK IT IS WORTH A READ! We are fortunate to go to a school that is truly is one of the kind:
    http://www.claremontmckenna.edu/facultysites/govt/FacMember/WElliott/ppe/other.htm

By virtue of you attending CMC, you are now propelled to having access to some of the finest opportunities around—CMC expects you to take advantage of it–and you probably will, because that is what you do. Be ambitious, but do not take yourself too seriously. My study group for Elliott’s Gov 20 final (freshman year) consisted of the 20 people, in that class, meeting in Phillips lounge exchanging notes, there ain’t no book sabotaging going on here. You are competing against yourself. No one is going to hold your hand and tell you what to do, and it might seem like there are a gazillion distractions (there are)–but people do get their S#!T done. You are already amongst the 1% of people our age, who have the chance to attend an elite college. You are on track–so make your college experience memorable and FUN! With a little hard work, raging hormones, a dash of discipline, interesting people, your many talents and passions, some creativity and an open mind–I guarantee you, this will be YOUR very own EPIC JOURNEY (little plug for Pitney and Busch)!

Looking forward to meeting you all soon! Thank you for reading my rant.

    Much love,

    Shamil

PS: Ask anyone, your RAs are not out to get you (like at many State schools), we got your back any time every time! Take it easy during dry week, it is the one week in the entire school year.

“Chill out with the Target runs” is so true. My well-meaning but sometimes overzealous mom went to Target WITHOUT me during orientation to get stuff, and got tons of all these crazy things like cutlery, disposable plates, folder bins and even a STEP LADDER. For most of the year, this wasn’t much of a problem since I just put all the stuff I didn’t need in my closet and forgot about it. Packing up at the end of the year, however, was literally one of the most hellish experiences of my entire life. Freshmen, go to Target with your parents and don’t let them buy crazy things.

It sounds like i made the right college choice! I’m extremely excited to take classes and meet a bunch of new and undoubtedly cool, interesting people. As for the statement regarding the talent and test scores of 2013: I can’t attest that i was the brightest or most talented student at my high school, but i sent in a few head-shots along with my application and they let me in no questions asked. I am one hot piece of ass!

Thanks for the advice! Guess that means I should start reading up on the news…. :P

I too will say I am not among the best or brightest of my school, but at any rate, I am sure I was accepted of my own merits. I’m very excited for CMC actually! I’ve been talking to one of the girls in my WOA group for ages…I spy a best friend!! ;)

As far as the whole Charles thing….poor fellow. Though it’s true I’ve seen lots of his posts all over the place, I wouldn’t go so far as to pick on him for it or draw conclusions about him before I’ve ever even met/seen the fellow. He seems to have an awful lot of haters though! Must be the price he pays for being super-involved lol….

Anyways Emily, thanks a bunch for the advice! I am definitely going to be using it ;)

One other thing you need to know: 98% of CMC Forum articles will turn into debates with/about/in spite of Charles Johnson.

    Politico.com…use it

Piece of advice number one is the truest story ever told.

Last until at least 6:30 on 6:01. And don’t throw up in or around the general door vicinity of Green 107. If you can avoid it. Really. Please don’t.

Per suggestion, Ive been reading real clear politics daily. I couldn’t help but notice a clear lack of liberal articles. I by no means consider myself a democrat, but many arguments made by various republican writers seemed to intentionally misconstrue presidential statements and poll responses to forward their obvious right wing discrepancies. I think I’ll stick to the economist. At least with them, my ignorance of english politics gives the impression of non-biased reporting. Are there any other political or news websites that you would suggest?

    • Agreed

Yeah, RCP has been moving decidedly rightward since the rise of Obama. I balance it by reading fivethirtyeight.com. It was founded by a baseball statistician, and focuses on polls and stats, and it’s got a leftward tilt, but not a crazy one.
