Over 700 CMCers went to the Ludacris concert last night.  Whether you like Ludacris or not (he might not be universally popular, but who is?), everyone seems to agree– we need to host more concerts and events like that.  Whether it’s bringing in rappers, rock groups, comedians, or other performers.  We should do it.

A minor constraint is money.  But even if we don’t reach our ticket sales goals, we can safely afford to throw at least four concerts a year like the one last night without the risk of significantly hurting ASCMC’s budget.  Even better, if we meet our goals, we can use profits from concerts on other student activities like trips, clubs, parties, and things we normally spend student fees on.

Anyway, we’re talking to some people at Pomona to see if we can pool resources ($$$) to get some more big names.  If there are 1,100 students at CMC, 1,700 at Pomona, and Bridges Auditorium seats over 3,000 people, there’s no reason we can’t pack it (an outdoor concert isn’t really an option because we are in a residential community– the police had to shut down the E-40 concert earlier this year).

Speak up if you want to help out or have ideas for the coming months and semesters.

More to come on this…

if you asked my honest opinion id say that i really dont like ludacris, but i lined up like everyone else to buy tickets as soon as they went on sale.

i think ASCMC would find that the student body is willing to buy tickets to almost anything (even if it doesnt have universal appeal) if they believe that in the future there will be more concerts with different target audiences (rock, rap, comedy… whatevs) that may interest them more. if, however, students feel like its a once a year or even a semester thing, they’re not going to be as likely to buy tickets to something they dont really like.

the more concerts the more successful!
but then again i dont know much about how much money was made/lost on ticket sales for luda (i get the impression it was very succesfull though)

ASCMC doesn’t put profit/losses from concerts on the World Wide Web. If you have a specific question, ask around, but it doesn’t make sense to list figures here.

Why wouldn’t it make sense to put figures on the Web? How do we know if we should have more concerts if we don’t know how much money was made?

And what was the cost of bringing Ludacris to campus?

It wouldn’t make sense for the same reason the ath doesn’t list prices paid for speakers and the school does not publicly list professor salaries– it would give future performers a bargaining advantage to up their fees. And profit is a derivative of ticket prices and performer fees… Maybe there are other reasons I’m not thinking of right now?

It sounds like you’re interested though so i’d recommend getting involved with ascmc or contacting those who can answer your questions in person.

i still dont see a reason why we cant know how much profit was made. if we’re the people ASCMC is intending to serve, it makes sense that we should be allowed to judge how efficiently they are allocating resources. not that i presume ascmc is embezzling funds or anything like that, but id like to know that they arent wasting money. also, if they’re making a large profit, id like to be informed so that i can help them to better serve the student body (by recommending things i’d like for them to do with the money proportionally to how much they have)

what about an email exclusively to the students with the info we’re all asking for?

if you include a notice about the confidentiality requirements or even create a web page that we have to log into to keep track of who has seen the info and electronically agree to confidentiality, i dont see what the problem would be. we could implement a system for keeping track of ascmc spending similar to what obama has purposed for tracking government spending. an online database that catalogs every revenue and expenditure would seem entirely reasonable to me- what could be wrong with a little oversight?

    Hey Nathan,

Releasing information about the concert and ASCMC’s financials are not within my powers as Campus Organizations Chair or Forum Web Editor, but I see and concede your points; I’m just explaining the reasoning I’m given as I’m not the one making those decisions. It’s frustrating for now, but there’s always next year.

The ASCMC funds tracking system is a good idea and one I’ve also suggested in the past, but ASCMC’s Board doesn’t agree that it’s worth it to do that, and I certainly see their alternative viewpoint.

Elections for next year’s board are in a few weeks; you should definitely keep your ideas in mind and consider running or applying for something if you aren’t going abroad. Talk to me if you have questions.

Guys, all meeting of ASCMC are open to all students. You can just march in the door and demand the financial figures from the board. AND they’ll tell you them. You get your info, they get to maintain financial discretion, everybody wins. If you’re too lazy to go get the info through proper channels, you clearly don’t want it very badly.

Good point. Meetings are Sunday at 6pm in the Heggblade Conference Room (but not this Sunday because of the Superbowl).

Edit: By the way, I should remind everyone that the initial budget is and has been online at ascmc.org under documents. There isn’t much that you can’t infer from that document aside from amounts spent on individual special events and parties. And you can easily figure that out if you know how much a keg costs ($60-80) or find out how much a DJ charges, etc.
