W.O.A.! Sex, Life and Relationships. Scripps Carnival. Dry Week. All those events took place during this year’s freshman orientation, but none were quite as well documented as the 5C Freshman Photo Scavenger Hunt. Last Saturday, freshmen and new students were given clues that led them to the Jay’s Place at Harvey Mudd, the Pitzer pool, the Motley at Scripps, and the Ath. Bonus points were awarded for keeping cool and pouring ice on another freshman. Congratulations to the winning team– Andie Wheatley, Kelsey Brown, Ryan Boone, JJ Suttle, Alyssa Roberts, and Abie Katz.

The clues they had to work with:

This 5C college is not too far to roam. Every year they host a gathering full of foam. After dancing the night away, get a famous Galileo Sub at the Place of Jay.

When things heat up, this place will keep you cool! So head out and take a picture at Pitzer’s pool.

More often full of shes than hes, this locale is known for its coffees and teas.

Enjoy intellectual discourse and speakers from across the world and nation, this location also hosts our annual Madrigals celebration.

BONUS: Pour ice on another freshman.

Midterms are a drag, but think about it this way: This time next week, it’ll be spring break(!) and you’ll be lounging/swimming/tanning/sleeping/Hulu’ing/anything but studying.

This term’s ASCMC Executive Board met for the last time yesterday. Here are the updates:

1. Relive the ol’ glory days of water gun fights the more grown-up, mature, and dangerous way by joining the new paintball club! Contact Sam Corcos ’11 or look for the Facebook group for more information.

2. Save the date– There will be some big 5C things going on the Friday or Saturday after spring break. The Party Inform for that weekend will have all the details.

3. Beginning after Commencement, Claremont McKenna College will offer free on-campus summer storage. …No, not really, but wouldn’t that be awesome? Anyways, come to Senate (10PM, Bauer Forum) tonight to witness the last Senate meeting of this term and see the Elections Committee’s nominations for the new ASCMC CFO, CO Chair, and Executive Secretary. New terms begin on March 23rd.

Have a great spring break, CMC! (And watch this video. It’s surprisingly accurate.)

Midterms + Masquerade Ball = wear it, CMC.

These are the updates from last night’s ASCMC meeting:

1. The Life After CMC series received $100 from the ASCMC General Budget to help cover the costs of their Etiquette Dinner. The dinner, mostly aimed towards seniors, is open to CMCers.

2. Love water polo but hate the water? Lucky for you! The Handball Club was just approved last night. It’s like water polo, on land… Contact Christophe Bindert ’11 for more information, or look for the Facebook group online.

3. The Forum(!) has had a record number of hits. In the shortest month of the year, the Forum reached an all-time high for monthly views, averaging over a thousand unique visits per day.

4. ASCMC speeches were held last night at Collins. Elections take place today from 11 AM – 1PM in front of (or inside, if it starts raining) Collins, and 5-7PM. Rock the vote. GOTV. Bring democracy to (AS)CMC. Whatever the phrase that works, get out to Collins and vote today! Results will be posted tonight on the doors of the Hub and outside Story House.

Here are the updates of (mostly events) from last night’s ASCMC Exec. Board meeting:

1. The Bocce Ball Club was approved last night. Don’t know what bocce ball is? Check out this YouTube video or, even better, contact Marshall Fisher ’11, the founder and president of the club. There will be weekly games, tournaments, and bocce BBQs, too.

2. ASCMC elections are coming up! Speeches will take place on Sunday, March 1st at snack. Voting will take place the next day at Collins dining hall and the apartments.

3. Hope you saved the date! This Saturday is the Masquerade Ball in North Quad. Don’t forget: masks are mandatory. (And yes, fabric with eye holes-Ninja turtle style do count.)

4. The freshman class presidents from the 5Cs are planning big things together. Watch out for an e-mail from Will Kahn ’12 for more info.

To do list: Buy an umbrella, study for midterms(!), consider deactivating Facebook in order to study for midterms, realize that it’s silly to deactivate Facebook right now and that only in the most severe cases (thesis) should it be done, read the updates from last night’s ASCMC Exec. Board meeting…

1. Interested in running for a position in ASCMC? There will be a mandatory info session this Wednesday at 5 PM* for all candidates. If you can’t make it to the meeting, make sure to reply to the e-mail Erik Hansell, ASCMC President, sent out last night ASAP.

2. The yearbook staff requested, and received, $150 from ASCMC’s General Budget. It should be awesome since they’re supposed to be delivered this year before Commencement. You can even relive the good ol’ glory days of high school by having your friends sign it. (Just avoid the cliche, “Never change! And HABAS!”)

3. Masquerade. Ball. Go to Michael’s Crafts stores or take a pair of scissors to a Jabbawockeez mask, whatever it takes, get ‘em ready. This will be epic. (Check the e-mail from Kylie Alsofrom for more info.)

*The original post stated that the meeting is at 8 PM… It’s definitely at 5 PM.

Soooo… It’s going to rain on and off for at least the next 10 days. But wait! There’s good news, too!

1. The Hub Quiz will be back before you know it. Juniors freshly back from abroad/DC should definitely check it out. There’s free food, the chance to show off your knowledge in everything from pop culture to history to sports (fact: Cardinals > Steelers), and the promise that some really great prizes will be given away.

2. No plans for Valentine’s Day? No big deal if you’re a sophomore. The class of 2011 will be taking a trip to watch an Ontario Reign Division II minor league hockey game. Roses on Valentine’s Day: $100. Watching grown men fight it out on an ice rink: priceless.

3. The Forum has awesome new writers and even more amazing articles. Read the articles, well, here. (Did you know Scripps tea was so delish AND open to the 5Cs?)

4. Remember: To guarantee that you get your money back, any check requests made by dorms/clubs/trips, etc. should be turned in to the appropriate Board member (either their personal Story House mailboxes or to Heggblade/DOS) within 2 weeks of the event. To help make things easier, be sure to put the date of the request on the form somewhere, as well.

(The ASCMC Executive Board met twice in the last three weeks. These updates are from both meetings.)

2. …Find out where the cash money is. Josh Siegel, the Clubs and Organizations Chair, will be presenting some special information tonight during Senate about how CMCers can find funds throughout the campus (from P. Gann to J. Nauls), not just through Senate’s fund.

3. …Add some much needed CMC flair to your wardrobe. Let’s face it, doing laundry is sometimes just not an option. Instead, buy a few shirts during the Forum Store’s recession sale! Tonight and tonight only, at snack, “economy class” CMC t-shirts will be on sale for only $10 each.

So, it’s definitely midterms part deux around CMC, but take solace in the fact that the goal of having a good time in C-Mont and the greater LA area, which are easily the most sinful of cities, will definitely be fulfilled this month with all of the following events:

1. Your SLC, Courtney Cikach, and the class presidents have got your plans covered for Sunday, November 23rd… the MLS Championship Game!! Tickets will be $10 each AND transportation will be provided. Soccer + the great company of your fellow CMCers + the questionable company of many LA/San Bernadino/OC-counties futbol fanatics = good times.

2. The seniors will be doing their traditional Vegas trip this weekend. For any underclassmen, don’t worry. We gambled our money away at Monte Carlo, which is just as good as Vegas… right?

3. CMCers usually like their beverages from a red cup, but take a hint from the ever classy James Bond and have a martini shaken, not stirred, next time you’re parched for a drink. Keep your fingers crossed for the theater to pull through, but you should definitely be looking forward to a Thursday midnight showing of the new James Bond flick: Quantum of Solace.
1. MONTE CARLO. Tickets will be sold during lunch, dinner, and snack (save possibly for election night dinner) at Collins Dining Hall. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Get dressed up and celebrate homecoming like you’re in high school again. Except this is better than high school.

2. This Tuesday is going to be HUGE. Head to McKena Auditorium between 6 and 9-10ish to celebrate/commiserate over the presidential election results with your favorite Dems, Republicans, libertarians, and decline-to-staters. If you’re going to the Ath (Obama’s favorite Chicago-style deep dish pizza AND Palin’s “moose” cake?!), be sure to hit up McKenna afterwards.

3. Like futbol more than football? Lucky you. The Claremont FC’s club recognition request was approved last night. One of their goals: “allow students a chance to play small-sided games of soccer.” The club meets several times a week, so make sure to catch ‘em on Parents Field if you’re interested.
