Karl Rove and Maureen Dowd to Speak at Athenaeum
Although the Fall 2008 Athenaeum schedule has not been finalized, former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove and New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd will be coming to CMC this semester. Karl Rove is slated to speak September 15 as a Res Publica Speaker; Maureen Dowd will speak November 17 as a President’s Office Speaker, according to information posted on the Athenaeum website.
Living up to its reputation, the Athenaeum is bringing us two very ideologically opposed speakers. In a recent column of Dowd’s, she criticizes Rove’s tactics:
“Actually, that sounds more like W.
The cheap populism is really rich coming from Karl Rove. When was the last time he kicked back with a corncob pipe to watch professional wrestling?
Rove is trying to spin his myths, as he used to do with such devastating effect, but it won’t work this time. The absurd spectacle of rich white conservatives trying to paint Obama as a watercress sandwich with the crust cut off seems ugly and fake.”
In the past, the Athenaeum has featured speakers as politically diverse as President Bill Clinton and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. As always, seats to see these speakers will be free to CMC students and open to others on a space available basis.
Other speakers this fall include leaders of industry from the Robert Day School Distinguished Speaker program, professors, authors, musicians, and scholars from all disciplines. The full Athenaeum schedule should be available within 1-2 weeks.

I wish they had told us this before I made plans to study abroad in Fall... c'est la vie, I suppose.

Oh man, I've heard things about MaDo in person. She supposed to be obsessed with the Clintons.
Rove sounds interesting, since he's still speaking before the election. I might have liked to see him.

This is painful.
Maureen Dowd is not ideologically opposed to Rove. She is a gossip columnist who feeds on the leaks that master media manipulators like Rove sprinkle onto the faces of MoDo and other the suckerfish.
Rove should be in prison for Contempt of Congress, not making money from schools like Claremont McKenna. Students, you are paying thousands of dollars to this criminal. Contempt of Congress is ACTUALLY a crime. Your tuition pays for him to come and lie to you.
And let's not forget that Maureen Dowd takes Rove's leaks whenever they they suit her. Her columns making fun of Kerry's peanut butter sandwiches, making fun of Kerry's windboarding, making fun of Gore's suit, or sigh, or misquotes about the internet/love canal/love story which all fueled the serial exaggerator charge that Rove planted in her hollow head.
She writes about haircuts and windsurfing not politics. She is the biggest waste of space in the NYTimes.
A dancing money and an organ grinder square off in a debate.
Again, your tuition pays for this garbage.

Who said our tuition pays for Rove's visit? It does not. His visit is paid for by private donors.
As for Dowd, I'm not sure, but I think her visit works the same way.
Most Athenaeum speakers are not paid through our tuition. In fact, many professors and academic programs are not paid through tuition, they are paid for by donors, endowment returns, etc.

And hey... even if they're not the most "pure" of characters, both still help to shape our culture and society, and anyone who has the power to do that is certainly worth seeing or listening to in my opinion.

Maureen Dowd may not be the most substantial journalist but her columns are usually thoughtful and funny. I'm definitely interested to see her.
Karl Rove is a criminal of the worst kind.
